Layered zirconia.
A zirconia framework carrying veneering ceramic built and fired over it. It produces optical depth monolithic cannot, and it asks for more clearance and more careful framework design to do it safely.
Where layering is worth it
In the aesthetic zone, layered ceramic gives depth that staining a monolithic surface does not reproduce — translucency that varies through the incisal third, internal character, and the way light behaves as the head moves.
For a single anterior unit beside an intact natural neighbour, that difference is frequently where the case is won or lost.
For posterior work it is a poorer trade, because the veneering ceramic takes direct occlusal contact and the aesthetic benefit is largely invisible.
Framework design determines whether it chips
Veneering ceramic needs to be carried by the substructure rather than bridging unsupported bulk. A coping cut back to a uniform thin shell leaves porcelain unsupported exactly where the cusp will be loaded.
Frameworks are therefore designed to follow the reduced anatomy, and are assessed on the die for both fit and form before any ceramic goes on. That is one of two points at which cases are inspected under the microscope — after the wax-up and again after the frame is finished.

Clearance is the constraint
A layered restoration needs room for the core and the veneering ceramic together, and facial reduction is the dimension most often underestimated on anterior work.
Under-reduced facially, the restoration is either overcontoured — pushing the labial profile out and affecting emergence and the lip — or built too thin to develop any internal character at all.
Depth cuts against a silicone index made from a diagnostic wax-up are the reliable method. Preparing anterior teeth freehand and judging by eye is where most anterior compromises originate.
Staging a demanding case
The Rx form provides Try In and Finish dates for a reason. A layered anterior restoration can be assessed at the biscuit stage, unglazed, while form, characterization and colour can all still be changed.
That converts one high-risk delivery into two lower-risk appointments. Assess hydrated, in natural lip position, under more than one light source, and be specific about what to change.
For demanding matches, patients can attend the laboratory for colour matching by appointment. Anterior shade matching sets out the sequence.
Where the porcelain sits matters
The Rx form asks for occlusion as porcelain or combination, and on a layered restoration that is a structural decision as much as an aesthetic one.
Porcelain in direct occlusal contact is the surface most likely to chip, particularly at unsupported cusp tips. A combination scheme — layered facially, full-contour zirconia where the load falls — puts aesthetics where they are seen and strength where they are needed.
For premolars and for anterior units in a patient with evident parafunction, that is frequently the better answer than layering the whole surface.
Firing and shade behaviour
Layered work passes through the furnace repeatedly, and the porcelain matures with each cycle. Repeated firings tend to increase translucency and can lower value slightly, which is why an extensively corrected case may not match one built in fewer cycles from the same powders.
This is one reason a biscuit-stage try-in is worth using on demanding cases. Assessing before the final glaze lets the ceramist adjust while both form and colour can still change.

What to put on the prescription
Tick Zirconia and specify layered, with the shade and the guide used. Photographs are worth more than any written description on anterior work — include the adjacent teeth showing internal character.
Record the preparation shade as well. Translucent ceramic transmits light, so a dark or post-endodontic substrate changes both the material opacity and the layering approach.
