Shade Communication.
Shade is the most frequently remade aspect of anterior restorative work, and very little of that is fabrication error. Most of it happens before the case ever leaves the practice.
Three variables, unequally weighted
Colour is conventionally described by hue, chroma and value. Hue is the colour family. Chroma is its saturation. Value is lightness or darkness.
Value dominates. The human eye is far more sensitive to differences in lightness than to differences in hue, which is why a restoration that is correct in hue and chroma but a step too light stands out immediately, while one slightly off in hue but correct in value often reads as acceptable.
This has a practical consequence for how you take a shade. Assess value first, ideally by squinting or by glancing rather than staring, because reducing the detail the eye receives makes lightness differences more obvious. Then narrow chroma, then confirm hue.
Know which guide you are using
The VITA classical guide is organized by hue family — A through D — with increasing chroma numbered within each family. It is familiar and widely used, but its ordering does not follow value, which makes systematic value matching awkward.
The 3D-Master system is arranged by value first, then chroma, then hue, which matches the order the eye actually judges in and makes it easier to arrive at a defensible match. Whichever you use, the guide name has to travel with the shade, because the designations are not interchangeable.
The conditions distort the result
Take the shade at the beginning of the appointment. Enamel dehydrates within minutes of isolation or sustained opening, and dehydrated enamel becomes lighter and more opaque. A shade taken late in an appointment is frequently a step high in value, and the restoration is then permanently too light once the patient's teeth rehydrate.
Light matters as much. Colour-corrected lighting in the region of daylight temperature gives the most reliable assessment; warm operatory lighting shifts the apparent hue, and mixed sources are worse than either alone. Surroundings matter too — bright lipstick, a strongly coloured bib or a vivid wall will all influence perception.
And the eye fatigues quickly. Look at the tooth and tab together for a few seconds at a time, looking away at a neutral grey or blue surface between attempts, rather than staring and second-guessing.
Metamerism
Two objects can match under one light source and differ visibly under another. That is metamerism, and it is why a restoration that matched perfectly at the seat appointment can look wrong to the patient in daylight outside the practice.
The defence is to assess under more than one light source before committing, and to check the final restoration in daylight if at all possible. It is also an argument for photographs, because an image taken with consistent lighting and containing the tab gives the ceramist a reference that is internally consistent regardless of what the operatory lighting was doing.
The preparation shade is half the answer
This is the most underrated piece of shade information a practice can send. Translucent materials transmit light, which means what sits underneath them shows through. A lithium disilicate crown on a bright, unstained preparation and the same crown on a dark, post-endodontic or metal-cored preparation will not look the same, however precisely the shade was matched.
Record the preparation shade using a stump-shade guide where you have one, or photograph the prepared tooth directly. If the underlying substrate is dark, the technician needs to know before selecting the material and its opacity — not afterwards, when the only remaining options are compromises.
Character is not the same as shade
A shade designation describes a base colour. It says nothing about the features that make a natural tooth read as natural: incisal translucency, mamelon structure, white flecking and hypocalcification, craze lines, cervical chroma, surface texture and the way the enamel reflects light.
In a young patient with pronounced internal character, a restoration matched perfectly on base shade but built with a uniform, featureless body will look obviously artificial beside its neighbour — and it will look wrong for reasons the patient can see but cannot name.
These features have to be communicated visually. A written note saying some incisal translucency conveys almost nothing; a photograph of the adjacent tooth shows the ceramist exactly what to reproduce, including how far the translucency extends and how abruptly it transitions.
Surface texture and the way light behaves
Two restorations of identical shade can look markedly different depending on surface texture, because texture governs how light scatters off the restoration before any colour is perceived. A highly polished surface reads brighter and more reflective; a textured surface with perikymata and developmental grooves reads softer and more natural, and matches an older adjacent dentition more convincingly.
Age is a reasonable guide. Younger teeth generally show more pronounced surface texture and greater incisal translucency; older teeth are typically smoother, flatter in the incisal third from wear, and higher in chroma at the cervical. Matching an older patient's restoration to a textbook young tooth is a common and avoidable mismatch.
If the patient has a strong preference — many want the restoration brighter than the adjacent teeth — that belongs on the prescription. It is a legitimate instruction, but only if we know it is deliberate rather than assuming a shade error.
Transmit it properly
Photographs with the tab in the same plane as the tooth, in focus, taken before dehydration and sent unedited. The shade designation with the guide name. The preparation shade. A note on what you are trying to achieve, and on anything the patient has said about previous restorations.
For genuinely demanding anterior cases, sending the patient to the laboratory for colour matching by appointment removes the transmission problem entirely, because the ceramist assesses the tooth directly. Fairmont sees patients for shade matching arranged through the practice, and for a single central beside an intact natural neighbour it is usually the better route.
